… I think not!
Admittedly it was the BBC1 local news but I think even they could have done better than the headline piece tonight.
The subject was the new Foreign Secretary, Margaret Beckett. However, did they discuss her plans, policies or opinions? Or even the fact that she is the first female Foreign Secretary? No they did not. Instead the piece focussed on her supposed bad taste in clothes. She was reported as meeting the American Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice wearing an orange trouser suit which “resembled a Guantanamo Bay jumpsuit”. The reporter then went on to interview the owner of the shop in Derby where she bought said trouser suit and suggest that it had been said that her taste in clothes reflected that of all Derby women.
Surely the BBC can do better than this? Are we treated to news stories like this about our male politicians? Yes, their clothes are mentioned, but certainly not as a headline news story.
